Lotto No. 12

Matouš Jaroslav (Hlinsko, 1941)

Flower
clear glass, blown in a mould, painted, wire, signed and dated J. Matouš 04, height roughly 50 cm (Zí)

After studying at the Glassmaking Secondary Industrial School in Železný Brod, he studied in prof. Kaplický and prof. Libenský’s studios at the AAAD in Prague. In 1998, he became one of the founding members of the artists’ group Rubikon, which was founded by the theorist Ivo Křen. Alongside Jaroslav Matouš, the other members were Bohumil Eliáš, Jaromír Rybák, Marian Voláb, and Jan Exnar. Rubikon was a loose group comprised of the leading glass artists who exhibited together in the Czech Republic and abroad.
In this work, Jaroslav Matouš uses an interesting technique that combines fused sculptures and soft wires with pieces of glass. This is how he creates objects of simple shapes, where a net of wires grows out of glass walls, which climbs up into the open space. The author thus achieves remarkable fragility and subtleness.
